To ensure you don’t have to rely on the wind and can surf anytime, anywhere, a JETSURF board is definitely the way to go. The popularity of these devices is growing rapidly, meaning more and more people want to experience the thrill of riding them on their local waters. Especially when your next holiday is still a long way off and you still want to enjoy the lovely weather on the water. But before you launch your MotoSurf board, there are a few questions you should clarify.
DO I NEED INSURANCE?
As a general rule, you should contact your personal liability insurer to check whether any damage caused by using the board is covered – in much the same way as a non-motorised surfboard. The use of surfboards falls within the scope of personal liability insurance and also covers other water sports craft
with a power output of up to 11.03 kW (15 PS). The situation is different when it comes to damage to your own board. Standard home contents insurance is not suitable for providing optimal and comprehensive cover for a MotoSurf, so it is definitely advisable to take out a separate comprehensive insurance policy. Ultimately, this is the only way to ensure, for example, that theft is properly covered, as the conditions set by home contents insurers do not align with the actual way the board is used.
Similarly, home contents insurance does not cover damage caused by one’s own clumsy use or accidents. Due to the novelty of MotoSurfs, it is currently still difficult to find an insurer willing to cover these water sports devices. Some insurance companies reject them outright, whilst others regard them as special risks. In particular, the risk of accidents arising from the use of a MotoSurf is currently very difficult, if not impossible, to assess. This makes a general risk assessment difficult and renders it virtually impossible for many insurers to develop suitable cover.
